Model of population cycle

The model of population cycle refers to the transition from high birth and death rates to low birth and death rates as a country develops from a pre-industrial to an industrialized economic system.

The model of demographic transition progresses in four stages:

-Old or preindustrial demographic regime: death rate and birth rate were both very high.
-First transition: the Industrial Revolution leads to a fall in death rate and an increase in population.

-Second transition: the birth rate begins to decline, and mortality is still down.

-Modern demographic regime: Mortality and birth rate are both low. In some places (like Galicia), the mortality rate is higher than the birth rate. This leads to a natural decrease.

Main migration waves

During the 19th century and until the Depression of the Thirties of the 20th century, over 60 million of Europeans migrated.
In a first wave, a lot of people from countries in central and northern Europe (UK, Germany, Ireland, Sweden, Norway...) emigrated to the United States and Canada.

In the last third of the 19th century a lot of people from southern and eastern Europe (Italy, Spain, Portugal, Poland and the Russian Empire) emigreted to South America: mainly Argentina and Brazil.

Time line: Stages of joining the European Union

This time line shows the countries of the European Union and the dates that they were incorporated.

World population distribution

In this graph we can see the world population distribution in 2011. The graph shows that China and India are the most populated countries in the world: 19,4% of global population lives in China. 17,5% lives in India. Other countries with a lot of population are U.S.A, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan, etc.

Population density

World population density is unequal. This is due to physical factors, like geography, weather... and human factors (job opportunities, political stability or instability...). In general it is considered that an area is sparsely populated when it has got a density of 10 inha./km2. It is a very populated area if the density exceeds 80 inha./km2.

Map of natural increase of world population

The natural increase is the number of birth minus the number of births. The rate of natural increase (RNI) is calculated by dividing the natural increase by the total population and multiplying the result by 100.

World water cycle

This picture shows the cycle of water

The Sun heats the water in rivers, lakes, seas, and oceans. It evaporates, and water vapour is formed. It rises up in the atmosphere. It cools and condenses, and clouds are formed. When the water droplets became heavy, it rains or snows. Water goes into the soil or to the rivers, lakes and oceans again. The cycle repeats itself.

World climatological map

The climate refers to the periodical and usual succession of certain weather types in a specific geographical area.

There are three types of climates on Earth: hot climates, cold climates and temperate climates.
